Biography

Alva Fitz Randolph was born in Appalachia, in West Virginia. See Appalachia Project.

Alva was born in 1867 in Berea, WV, the son of Asa Fitz Randolph and Marvel Maxson. He grew up on the family farm in Berea, in a strong Seventh Day Baptist tradition. After finishing school, he taught school and was involved in church affairs. In 1888, he married Mary Caroline Hoff. The following year, Alva started his college studies at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., and the couple settled there, He was awarded a BS in 1893[1]. The couple remained in the Alfred area the rest of their lives, buying a farm just south out of Alfred which he named 'Sunny Cove farm'[2]and raising a family of five children, and later also having a house in the village itself. Alva was very active in civic affairs and the farming community, and was one of the founders of the Allegany Farm Bureau. At some point, the road where his was located was renamed Randolph Road. His wife died in 1944, and Alva died of neck cancer when he went for treatment in Buffalo, NY in 1949. They are buried together in the Alfred Rural Cemetery in Alfred.

  • In his autobiography, Alva's brother Alois Preston tells of Alva being his teacher in Berea when Preston was about 16 years old, or about 1887-1889, just before Alva married and went to Alfred to study. Preston also tells stories (Chapter 5) about Alva being the best shot and squirrel and crow hunter in the family; getting tricked with food bribes to do work for his sisters, and having a number of lambs lost to wild cats while under his care. He certainly had a reputation for preferring to read and study instead of hunting, etc. like the other boys .
  • In another autobiography by Alva's nephew Ashby Fitz Randolph, Ashby describes his stay at Alva's farm in 1918 and his "Uncle Alvie" as "one of the best farmers in New York and was the head of their Farm Bureau. He had a registered herd of Holsteins that he had built. He also developed his own strain of potatoes and sold seed potatoes."[3]
  • Note that there was an Alva Fitz Randolph born in Rhode Island in 1870 to Lewis Fitz Randolph -- don't confuse the two! It even appears that the Rhode Island Alva came to study at Alfred after our Alva settled there, living next door in Hornellsville in the 1892 census.

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members in the family where Alva is a child as their middle name as if part of their surname: In some censuses, the family is recorded using FitzRandolph or Fitz Randolph. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname Fitz Randolph as Last Name at Birth for Alva, his siblings and father. (Need to confirm how Fitz Randolph was used in the Asa Fitz Randolph family in legal documents and when births were recorded.) Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed!

DNA confirmation

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed with a 23andMe test match between R. Fitz Randolph and James Eckman, third cousins. Their MRCAs are John Maxson and Mary Bee, their 2nd great grandparents. Predicted relationship by 23andMe: 4th Cousin based on 0.51% DNA shared across 2 segments.
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Tom Randolph and Mary Williams, second cousins twice removed. Their MRCA is John LaForge Fitz Randolph, the third great grandfather for Tom and the great grandfather for Mary. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 4th-6th Cousins, based on sharing 55 cM across 7 segments; Confidence: not reported.
  • Alva is confirmed as the child of either Asa Fitz Randolph or Marvel Maxson or both by a triangulated group consisting of Thomas Fitz Randolph (GED kit M011134), Lucy Hansen (23andme) and Robert Lee Carson (GEDmatch kit M085143) sharing a 18.4 cM segment on chromosome 20 from 21,000,000 to 29,000,000, with [Davis-7034|Thomas William Davis]] (1719-1795) and Tacy Crandall (1721-1795) identified as the most recent common ancestors. Their son, Nathan Davis, is a direct ancestor of Alva through both his father and his mother, so the segment could have been passed to him through either line, or both lines.

Untriangulated DNA Match

  1. Samuel Fitz Randolph (1738-1825)
  2. Thomas William Davis (1719-1795) and Tacy Crandall (1721-1795)
  3. David Fitz Randolph (1690-1773) and Sarah Molleson (1695-1738).

It would seem that the Y-DNA match between Thomas Randolph and Myron Randall would be the most significant DNA confirmation of their paternal lines back to their MRCA Edward Fitz Randolph Jr (Fitz_Randolph-42). If they match sufficiently, that would include Alva and Asa. See the Help for Y-DNA confirmation: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Y-Chromosome_DNA_Confirmation for guidance.

You are right. We haven't recorded it, though, because the link on Randall side was only a family rumor before the dna test and a convincing paper trail is still lacking to convincingly confirm the subsequent working hypothesis that the Fitz Randolph link was from Joseph Randel-41 being the son of Samuel Fitz_Randolph-23. I will get back in touch with Myron to discuss. I think my other ydna matches in the FTDNA Fitz Randolph project have similar issues so I haven't pushed to get any of them on wikitree, but would be a good time to check! Have also started floating the idea of some targeted testing to confirm the various Fitz Randolph branches in America.
